I had used the Rough Guide to Normandy/Brittany and found it helpful, so when I planned a trip to NYC I got this guide. The book covers the neighborhoods and attractions in detail, however in the end I do not recommend it.The book lacks suggested timelines such as "if you have 3 days" type of thing. Nor within its coverage of an area such as the Lower East Side does it give suggested tours. So while the book may have all the information about the sights between its covers, you'll find yourself walking down the canyons of buildings that make up NYC with no real idea of a good route to maximize your time and paging back and forth to try to figure out what you are seeing and why it is important. Each tourist can spend hours and hours going back and forth with maps and this book, trying to put together a decent order to visit things. Or the author could have done it once for you, in a city he is familiar with. I chalk this up to a learning experience; I won't buy a guidebook that doesn't at least offer to help with the planning. The Rough Guide to Normandy/Brittany was helpful, i realize in retrospect, because there aren't that many places to visit within the small towns that predominate there so just listing them at all sufficed. Not so for a city like NYC.
